Fixing Gmail’s IMAP on iPhones running 3.0

Not long after upgrading to version 3.0 on my iPhone I began to notice that my Gmail IMAP began being unresponsive. In other words, actions I would take on the iPhone wouldn’t show up on the web. It’s pretty frustrating to go through and archive and organize all of your messages on your iPhone only to log into your web account later and see that none of it is actually reflected.

Apparently the key for people using firmware version 3.0 is to delete your current Gmail setup and start fresh choosing “other” on the setup screen rather than “Gmail”.

It’s still not perfect, but it’s better than what it was before. You can see the full setup directions via Gmail Help after the jump. This is definitely a step forward, but come on Gmail, you can do better than this.

To configure IMAP for your iPhone or iPod touch, just follow these steps:

  1. Make sure you’ve enabled IMAP in your main Gmail settings
  2. On your iPhone or iPod touch’s home screen, tap Settings
  3. Tap Mail
  4. Tap Add Account…
  5. Tap Other
  6. What if I tap ‘Gmail’ instead?
Archiving and deleting messages will work differently. Our instructions ensure Gmail works as designed.
  7. Tap Add Mail Account
  8. Enter your account information, being sure to use your full Gmail address (or full Google Apps email address)
  9. Tap Save
  10. For Incoming Mail Server:
    • Host Name is ‘imap.gmail.com’
    • User Name is your full Gmail address, including ‘@gmail.com’ (or full Google Apps email address)
  11. For Outgoing Mail Server:
    • Host Name is ‘smtp.gmail.com’
    • User Name is your full Gmail address, including ‘@gmail.com’ (or full Google Apps email address)
  12. Tap Save
  13. Check our recommended client settings, and adjust your client’s settings as needed.

And you’re done. You can add additional Gmail accounts by repeating the same steps above.

Now that your account is set up, learn how actions in your client sync with Gmail.
