Ganga Queen – Schapelle Corby

by James on July 1, 2008

Schapelle CorbyJust watched the Ganga Queen documentary on HBO. I have to say it was pretty fascinating. While I feel 20 years is a completely insane sentence for any amount of marijuana, watching the documentary you definitely get the feeling that neither Schapelle Corby, her family or supporters helped her case in any way.

That fact is even more apparent if you take a look at some of the info on her Wikipedia entry.

Mercedes Corby, Schapelle’s sister, doesn’t come across as the most sympathetic character, at least not in this documentary. Not to mention her Balinese husband who wouldn’t stop talking about how great pot was and how “we” call it God’s weed.

All of that’s neither here nor there in the grand scheme of things.

What I found incredibly hard to believe, and what no one seemed to mention, is that neither Corby nor her brother, who were the only ones who actually lifted the boogie board bag, didn’t notice that the bag was 10lbs heavier than when they dropped it off. The bag contained a boogie board and some fins, you would think that an extra 10lbs out of nowhere would have been pretty easy to notice.  Don’t think so?  Take your bag that you carry everyday, drop a 10 pound weight in there and then pick it up after a bit and see if you notice a difference.  I bet you do.

The criminologist who was meeting with her lawyers kept claiming that in all of his experience Corby doesn’t seem to fit the profile of someone who would smuggle drugs. Has this guy ever seen Locked Up Abroad? She’s exactly the kind of person who would get caught smuggling drugs.

Another thing that doesn’t look good is the fact that Corby’s Australian lawyer did an interview this month with an Australian television station and admitted that he fabricated the story about the baggage handlers possibly being involved and issued a public apology to them.

According to a new survey by the Sydney Morning Herald, more than half of the people polled believed that Corby was guilty with 3/4 of those people believing she should serve out her full 20 year sentence.

One thing you can say definitively about Schapelle Corby is that she’s not a rat. It seems hard to believe that if she is in fact guilty (and yes I believe she is), that no one else in her family was in on it somehow.  I don’t think it’s possible that she could have, or would have attempted this on on her own.

Did you see the show? If so, what are you thoughts on her guilt or innocence or her insane prison term?

After seeing "The Ganga Queen" I am not sure one way or the other that Ms. Corby is guilty, however we are talking about pot, not heroin, cocaine or "the hard stuff" just pot. Her lugguge was not locked. Ms. Corby could have or could not have known this marijuana was in her lugguge. The penalty for bringing in or taking out of the country of Bali any kind of drug is death period. What this documentry taught me was 1) Know the laws of any country you are traveling to and 2) Make sure you have luggage that is tamper proof and make sure it's locked. I noticed in the news clip that all kinds of people were handling "the bag" with their fingers, no gloves, no proper investigation, no finger printing (how could they when so many people fingered the bag and pot inside) and the "trial" appeared like a scene from planet of the apes, a bunch of primitive people dressed up in judges robes sitting around some with smirks on their faces. Bali's court system appeared to me a corrupt sham. Again, it appeared like many people were allowed to finger the evidence and no scientific investigation was done. The "lawyer" assigned to Ms. Corby was young, inept and really came off as a simple translator nothing more. I suspect if this case had not been widely publized Ms. Corby would have ended up with a bullet to the head vs 20 years in prison there. The prison, judges everything about Bali was very primitive. Be warned, if you are a citizen of a "progressive" and "civilized" country, once you leave your country you are totally at the mercy of the country you are entering. Be wared and be cautious. I wouldn't go to Bali now if someone handed me a ticket with all expenses paid. I am an American and at least we have a trial by jury. Our legal system isn't perfect but it's way better than Bali and we don't have the death penalty for pot. This was a scary documentry, very scary. Ms. Corby is lucky her case was publized because if it hadn't been she might have ended up with "death by firing squad" instead of 20 years for a crime she possibly didn't even commit. Very shabby investigation, very primitive court proceedings.

It doesn't matter if she's guilty or innocent, it was a totally unfair trial and she should be free on that basis alone.

I haven't seen the the show but I have been interested in the Corby case. The issue with the weight of the boogie board bag is easily explained.

Corby didn't carry the bag from the baggage carousel to the customs desk, her brother did. He would not be expected to know how heavy it normally felt. Even if Corby did notice something odd as she lifted it to the desk, it was too late. Two things that she did notice were that the handle had been cut and the double zip was done up to the middle of the bag not the side as she always did it.. She thought it odd at the time but thought nothing more of it. Why would you?

Also, the drugs were inside two plastic bags, one inside the other. At the time of discovery the bags had been slit open with a knife. What kind of idiot drug smuggler tries to smuggle drugs in an open bag?
    • Hi, I have seen "The Ganga Queen" and I am not convinced either way on wether she is guilty or not. What I am absolutely convinced of, and I don't smoke pot , but I have many years ago, is that a 20 year sentence for smuggling it is absolutely stupid, assinine and ridiculous! Pot is in no way a drug that is harmful in the ways that most street drugs are, the worst that can happen is you chill out and eat a huge pizza! Do they just throw these sentences around without any for thought? Thats 20 years of a young ladies life, pissed away cause some up tight idiots think that pot is bad! And as far as the assholes that say she deserves her sentence, you try and go spend 1 day in prison, then shoot your mouths off on how deserving of that sentence she really is. That movie just simply pissed me off! And again shows me the assholes we have running many countries in this world! They really don't have a fucking clue.........
