Gmail launches Multiple Inboxes

by James on February 6, 2009

Gmail launched a pretty cool new feature tonight in Labs called Multiple Inboxes.  It’s extremely handy for everyone out there running wide screen monitors on high resolution.  It really takes advantage of the horizontal real estate on my 1920×1080 monitor that I keep my gmail opened on.

multiple_inboxesMultiple Inboxes basically lets you set up 1-5 either search choices or label results and it will display them alongside your main inbox.  You can control how many messages are shown in the lists.

Right now I have it set to show my starred emails, basically I’m using this like a task list of emails that I either need to respond to, or somehow need further action.  I’m also showing three more inboxes one with facebook labels because I often get a notification that someone has commented or sent me a message and I don’t get back to them right away, this will let me get it out of my inbox and still have it in my face.  I have the same thing for Twitter for basically the same reason, and I have an inbox showing pics labeled my daughter, so I can have easy access to the most recent ones.

The one feature I would really like to see in Multiple Inboxes though is the ability to actually remove messages from the list.  Let’s say I have 5 facebook messages showing and I go and respond to all five messages, I don’t necessarily want to see those anymore.  Zero Inboxers will probably hate this aspect.

You can turn on the feature in your labs and then go under your settings tab to, well…adjust the settings.
