Amber Lyon Ambushes Craig Newmark in an Attempt to Seem Relevant

I’m quite certain that Craig Newmark, Jim Buckmaster and Craigslist in general don’t need me to come to their defense, but this whole Amber Lyon thing is making me flip my lid.

When a vapid, half-ass excuse for a journalist tries to make a name for herself by ambushing one of the nicest guys in the tech industry it really pisses me off.

I’ve lived in New York City for the past 12 years and I will openly admit my bias for Craigslist. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I’ve used Craigslist to find every single apartment or house I’ve ever lived in, every single roommate I’ve ever lived with and every single piece of electronic equipment I’ve ever sold has all been on Craigslist. Each time it cost me absolutely nothing.

A decade after incorporating Craigslist and the only thing they’re interested in is helping people. In a corporate climate where companies openly profit from the deaths of American Servicemen and Women, I’d say that behavior should be lauded not attacked.

In December 2006, at the UBS Global Media Conference in New York, Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster told Wall Street analysts that Craigslist has little interest in maximizing profit, instead it prefers to help users find cars, apartments, jobs, and dates. Name one other company with the user base and traffic that Craigslist has that can say that, just one.

Do people post incredibly fucked up, despicable shit on Craigslist? Yes, of course. They also make it easier than any other site out there to report those kinds of violations along with policing the site themselves. If you were seriously interested in anything but 15 minutes of fame and some face time on CNN then it would have been much more constructive to approach Mr. Newmark with your idea for a story to not only see what he had to say about what they were doing to prevent these sorts of posts, but to also present your own ideas in a respectful way.

Will Wyclef Jean Do the Right Thing on Larry King Live Thursday Night?

CNN says that Wyclef Jean will appear on Larry King Live this Thursday and announce his intention to run for President of Haiti. Personally I’ve always been a fan of Wyclef, at least of his music, which is all I really know about him since I don’t know him personally. It seems as if no one knows much about his political stance other than what’s in his songs. One thing is for sure, if Wyclef is serious about running for President of Haiti he needs to take the time on Larry King to address his recent charity issues.

The Smoking Gun looks at the foundation’s funny money.

  1. The company has only given the IRS returns for the years 2005, 2006, and 2007, despite being incorporated 12 years ago.
  2. In 2006, the Foundation reported donations of $1 million (most of which came from People magazine).
  3. $31,200 of that money went in rent to a recording studio owned by a foundation board member.
  4. $100,000 was paid to Wyclef Jean for his performance at a benefit concert.
  5. $250,000 went to a for-profit Haitian company in which Jean and a foundation board member are said to “own a controlling interest”.

Wyclef adamantly denies any wrongdoing doing saying, “Have we made mistakes? Yes. Did I ever use Yele money for personal benefit? Absolutely not.”

“It is impossible for me to even comprehend the recent attacks on my character and the integrity of my foundation,” he said in an earlier statement. “The fact that these attacks come as we are mobilized to meet the greatest human tragedy in the history of Haiti only serves to perplex me even further.”

Now’s his chance to prove it. These figures are very specific on amounts and where they went to. They’re not vague accusations of some mysterious wrongdoing. The people of Haiti need hope right now and if Wyclef Jean is the one who’s going to give it to them he needs to specifically address these accusations one by one to clear himself and his organization of any wrongdoing.

Should Religious Affiliation Matter for Supreme Court Justices?

CNN craps all over the First Amendment

Six Catholics and three Jews walk into a bar…I said I wanted to hold nine grudges complained the man.

Can we at least pretend to give a damn about the First Amendment to the United States Constitution?

A legitimate news agency (which I realize is a stretch for CNN) shouldn’t be mired in what basically amounts to tabloid gossip about the religious beliefs of the Supreme Court justices. Why is it that the same flag waving, commie hating, gay bashing conservatives are always the ones so worried about what Jesus a politician or judge believes in?

A Supreme Court’s justice’s beliefs are personal and should have absolutely no bearing on whether or not they are qualified to hold a seat on the highest court in the country. We should be seeking out people that are wise enough, smart enough and secure enough in their beliefs to understand the importance of not allowing their own set of morals to affect their decisions.

Until we can come together as a nation of right-minded citizens and demand that our leaders have the courage to stand up to the vocal minority of religious zealots trying to shove their morals down the throats of society by any means necessary.

There’s no lower form of creature in our society currently than the spineless politicians that run on and kowtow to the religious right in order to get elected. There’s no greater threat to the success of our society than the cost of trying to enforce other people’s moral beliefs in a set of laws where punishment for even minor infractions land the guilty people in jail or prison without ever having harmed any person or their property.

Until that can happen, until we can put reason and logic ahead of arbitrary, self-righteous egoists trying to superimpose their values on society, we’re in for a long, dark journey to happiness.

CNN Fails on Coverage of Historic Passing of Health Care Reform

Yes, I know it’s only the House of Representatives and that the bill still needs to make it through Congress, but it’s an historic vote nonetheless. No other such “sweeping” health care reform has made it this far. But to devote more real estate to a woman that lost 71 pounds? Seriously, that’s just ludicrous. WTF CNN?

Campbell Brown Takes Rush Limbaugh to Task

A week ago I laid out my two cents on how to deal with blustery windbags like Rush Limbaugh. Fortunately, it looks like even certain members of the MSM are finally starting to take a similar stance. Now is not the time for us to let our progress be held back by self-righteous chest beaters who try desperately to serve themselves through fear and prejudice. Now is the time for change. Now is the time for progress. Now is the time to listen to yourself, not to angry, selfish, small minded people who will do or say anything, no matter how vile, to try and keep their money rolling in.

Note how angry and contorted Rush is, the man has no ability to control himself. Thankfully Campbell Brown calls him on it.

Rush Limbaugh Says He Hopes Obama Fails

Imagine if a prominent Democrat would have said this about Bush during such a precarious time in the Nation.  It would have been fodder for the right wing pundits for years.

I certainly hope we are slowly reaching a point in American history where blowhard bullies and shit stirrers like Limbaugh find themselves being tuned out more and more by people who actually want to be a part of the solution rather than part of the problem.

Just this past August, George W. Bush, George H.W. Bush and Jeb Bush all called in to Rush’s show to congratulate him on 20 years of being on the radio.

Oil prices were at their highest, the country was in the midst of a recession, Wall Street and the banks were crumbling, the War in Iraq and Afghanistan were still raging with no end in sight.  All a result of choices Bush had made during his last eight years in office.  Did Rush use the opportunity to take Bush to task?  Not likely.

Here’s a sample of how the conversation went:

RUSH: Have you heard what Senator Obama wants to do? He wants another stimulus check of a thousand dollars to every American paid for by the oil companies.

THE PRESIDENT: Yeah. Well, what we ought to be doing is encouraging oil companies to find oil, and that’s the best way to take the pressure off the gasoline prices. We’re on a very strong push to get the Congress to allow for there to be offshore drilling, and most Americans understand now that an increase in oil, particularly here in America, will help take pressure off of price. And I tell people I’d rather, you know, be buying American oil instead of sending our money overseas.

RUSH: You know, Mr. President, it’s amazing. In 2004 during your campaign, Senator Kerry was constantly criticizing you for not “jawboning” with the Saudis enough to bring the price of oil down. Now, four years later, they’re doing everything they can to keep the price from coming down. They apparently want it to remain high.

THE PRESIDENT: Well, they may want to, but the American people want to see some relief. It would be like a massive tax cut when the gasoline prices decline. So we’re in times of economic uncertainty and the more money people have in their pockets the quicker we’ll be able to recover, in my judgment. You asked how I’m doing. My spirits are high; I’m going to finish strong. I love my family and I’m spending two days here with mother and dad before I head overseas.

Somehow he managed to insult Obama and Kerry all while slobbering over how brilliant Bush’s run in office had been.

Amazing.  But there is no reasoning with mean-spirited bullies like Limbaugh.  They huff and puff just to hear themselves speak.  There is no sense of introspection.  To them they are right, end of story.  There are no other sides.

The only way to get rid of people with that frame of mind is to tune them out.  Arguing with people like that just boosts their egos as if they are definding some noble thought or ideal, when in fact they are just towing the line.
