Rep. Anh “Joseph” Cao Suggest BP CEO Should Do the Honorable Thing and Kill Himself

Back in the day the Asian culture didn’t mess around with someone bringing this kind of disgrace upon themselves and their family without having some serious repercussions. Like a giant knife your belly.

Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) today called for McKay to resign. But during today’s hearing before a subpanel of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Rep. Anh “Joseph” Cao, the Vietnamese-American Republican who represents New Orleans, suggested a harsher form of punishment.

“Mr. Stearns asked Mr. McKay to resign,” Cao said. “Well, in the Asian culture we do things differently. During the Samurai days, we just give you a knife and ask you to commit harakiri.”

What do you guys think? Too harsh, not harsh enough?

What’s incredibly frustrating about the greed of huge, multi-national corporations is that Hayward may not even lose his job over this and even if he does he’s sure to be the CEO of another company sooner or later.

I think death would actually be an easy way out. I think he should be stripped of all of his personal assets and be forced to live in a trailer on the Gulf Coast for the rest of his life with a huge sign on top of his trailer saying, “I’m the asshole that used to be the CEO of BP and and I personally oversaw the most devastating ecological disaster in American history.”

Student Uses Facebook to Shed Light on Towing Company’s Shady Business Practices

T&J Towing decided not to actually address the disgruntled car owner’s complaint, choosing instead to file a $750,000 lawsuit against him for slander and defamation

This story epitomizes exactly what gets me so amped about social media. Anytime you hear me talk or write about social media and why I’m so passionate about it you’ll definitely get an earful about how social media gives people tools that allow them to crush it and level the playing field.

Justin Kurtz, a 21-year-old Western Michigan University student, who started a group on Facebook to gripe about the company, now has more than 4,200 members.

It is my firm belief that my car was recently “broken into” but all that was stolen was my arboretums parking pass. This was an act by T&J so that they could charge me $120 to get my car out of impound. Please invite your friends to get justice against T&J!!!

“It’s not like I was making untrue claims or anything,” he said. “It’s not like I had control over anything that everyone had posted the whole time. I told everyone to be professional, don’t post any threats. Just tell your story and that’s what pretty much everyone did.”

Some BP Perspective

A NASA satellite image shows the BP oil slick on the sea's surface

Let’s consider for a moment, the unthinkable. The BP spill in the Gulf was the result of a terrorist act. Of course we all know that’s not the case but thinking of it in that context does give us some new perspective.

Now let’s continue our make believe story and imagine that the despicable terrorist responsible for this incomprehensible act of destruction was not only identified but captured as well. Now let’s go even further and imagine that not only was this monstrous bastard of a terrorist caught, but, shockingly, there was already a law on the books to deal with asshole terrorists trying to wreak havoc on oil wells. Hooray!

But wait, there’s a problem. Boo! The problem is that this jerkoff terrorist was so successful and got so freaking lucky that he created a, hitherto, totally inconceivable amount of destruction.

Of course since we were completely unable to conceive this unthinkable, astronomical amount of destruction from a terrorist that, up until now couldn’t even light his shoe or his underwear on fire properly, that we were totally unprepared to adequately deal with and punish said terrorist so, appallingly, the maximum sentence for this atrocious crime is a mere ten years.

That’s it, there’s no way around it. But wait, now that we’ve been able to actually witness destruction on this vast scale we have the opportunity to change the law, to actually hold this asshole terrorist accountable for what he did. We have the ability to make sure that the punishment fits the crime.

A young heron sits dying amid an oil-covered mangrove on an island in Barataria Bay, off Louisiana. The area is also home to brown pelicans, terns, gulls and roseate spoonbills. (Gerald Herbert/associated Press)

There’s only one problem. Asshole terrorist guy and all his friends gave a crapload of money to some shady politicians and, believe it or not, these arrogant pricks have the nerve to openly block the government’s attempt to hold this guy liable.

In an opening skirmish over how much money companies should be forced to pay for oil spill damages, Democratic legislators Thursday failed to speed through legislation to raise liability caps from $75 million to $10 billion.

Their effort was thwarted by Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, a key oil industry ally who said that the bill would end up empowering only the “biggest of the big oil” companies to drill America’s offshore resources.

With bought off elected officials and corporate recklessness like this who needs enemies.

In March 2005, a massive explosion ripped through a tower at BP’s refinery in Texas City, Texas, killing 15 workers and injuring 170 others. Investigators later determined that the company had ignored its own protocols on operating the tower, which was filled with gasoline, and that a warning system had been disabled.

The company pleaded guilty to federal felony charges and was fined more than $50 million by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

I’m no expert, but the problem seems to be that when a government agency tries to step in and institute regulations and procedures that could have saved at least 2 dozen lives, each and every time BP has told them, in essence, to go fuck themselves.

Just last fall, BP fought off safety regulations, continuing with business as usual. In a September 14, 2009 letter to MMS, Richard Morrison, BP vice president for Gulf of Mexico production, fought against an MMS proposal that would require operators to have their safety program audited at least once every three years, instead of the voluntary system that is currently in place. Morrison wrote: “We are not supportive of the extensive, prescriptive regulations as proposed in this rule. … [the voluntary programs] have been and continue to be very successful.” MMS has estimated that the proposed rules would cost operators about $4.59 million in startup costs and $8 million in annual recurring costs.

A Wall Street Journal report also found that BP’s oil well in the Gulf of Mexico did not have a remote-control shut-off switch that is used by two other oil-producing nations as a last-resort safeguard against underwater spills. The device is voluntary in the U.S., and while it is not clear whether it could have prevented the spill, it is another indicator of BP’s lax safety measures and proclivity for convenience over caution.

Then again, you don’t increase your first quarter profits by 135% to close to $6 billion in one year by worrying about pesky safety regulations and people’s lives.

BP as Bad at Vocabulary as they are on Saftey Measures

After almost a month and growing pressure from the White House and the media BP has finally released video of the oil “spill”. WTF? The Exxon Valdez was an oil “spill” of a finite amount of oil, this is a fucking volcano of oil erupting from the bottom of the seabed.

This oil spill is going to be going on indefinitely until BP figures out how to get it fixed.

Cowboy Health Care

In two or three or four generations I hope the children of our children’s children are wise enough to look back on our generation with kindness. With more of a smirk and sense of wonder at our naivety and unwillingness to do what is right by our fellow man, rather than a bitter disdain for a people that could, on one hand, preach family values and, on the other, allow their neighbors to die, uninsured, as a sacrifice to the all mighty dollar.

I hope they choose to look at the bigger picture and see what has led us to this place where people are willing to vehemently oppose healthcare for people cut from the same cloth as themselves. People who may have been forced into surviving by whatever means they can, even if it means working for a company that doesn’t offer healthcare for its employees just so they can put food on the table.

I hope that they are far enough removed from us, however, that they, no matter how hard they try, cannot quite comprehend how what were otherwise decent, hard working people, associated healthcare with being a “personal ATM”. People who believed that healthcare was a privilege, not an inalienable right.

I hope that they are baffled at how we could have allowed private insurance companies, whose only goal is to turn a profit, to funnel tens of millions of dollars of those profits directly to the politicians who we elected to serve and protect us. The same politicians who, in turn, actively enabled an environment that allowed the least among us to whither and die.

I hope that they can understand the hypocrisy of a nation of people that claim to be a Nation of good, God fearing Christian people.

On the last day, Jesus will say to those on His right hand, “Come, enter the Kingdom. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was sick and you visited me.” Then Jesus will turn to those on His left hand and say, “Depart from me because I was hungry and you did not feed me, I was thirsty and you did not give me to drink, I was sick and you did not visit me.” These will ask Him, “When did we see You hungry, or thirsty or sick and did not come to Your help?” And Jesus will answer them, “Whatever you neglected to do unto the least of these, you neglected to do unto Me!”

I hope.

A Few Facts About Net Neutrality

What the web might look like if Net Neutrality went away. via @nickbilton by way of @Alyssa_Milano

What the web might look like if Net Neutrality went away. via @nickbilton by way of @Alyssa_Milano

If you’re reading this then, more than likely, you’re on the internet. And, it stands to reason, if you’re on the internet you probably enjoy using the internet for all sorts of wonderful things, such as looking up fun facts like the average weight of a Beluga Whale or trying to find online photos of your close friends out having some good clean fun.

Furthermore, if you are using the internet the presumption is that you probably like the internet. And if you like the internet and don’t really care about the Net Neutrality issue then you’re probably a jerk. Fact. If you do care about Net Neutrality but oppose it, you’re probably a rich jerk. Fact.

Net Neutrality, at it’s root, would put into place protections against telecom companies restricting or “slowing down” any information you are trying to access on the web. It means that if you’re on Time Warner Cable they can’t strike a deal with AOL to allow their information to come blazing through their network while narrowing the pipeline on other, less connected sites such as, well this one for example.

Opposing Net Neutrality would be like trying to get a teacher fired for stopping the school bully from beating up the 98-pound weakling. It makes no sense. The government isn’t placing restrictions on the internet, they are trying to ensure that corporations and telecom companies do not limit the amount of content, nor the speed of the content you have access to.

Imagine a world where, in order to turn a larger profit, the telecom companies only allowed 1 out of every 10 personal calls made to you get through. This allows them to make sure the line is clear for telemarketers the 10 out of 10 marketing calls that get through. Sounds pretty stupid right? Well, welcome to the future of the internet without Net Neutrality.

Top 20 Nations in ITIF Broadband Rankings

Top 20 Nations in ITIF Broadband Rankings

The United States already ranks an atrocious 15th in the world on broadband speeds and price per MBPS, behind such powerhouse nations as Iceland, Portugal, Canada, Poland and Korea.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the government taking away personal freedoms or “controlling information” and anyone who tries to make it about that is simply doing what has been done for the past eight years, preying on people’s fears of the unknown. This has everything to do with keeping the internet a level playing field that doesn’t crap on the little guy.

The internet is the one place that, for little or no overhead, you can create a presence, start building a brand, and depending on your wiles create quite a name for yourself. Try making an impact on the world when you’re site is loading at a snails pace because AT&T’s packets are getting priority to yours every time a page is requested.

We’ve sat idly by for the past 25 years while the government has dismantled or put in place legislation that, for all intents and purposes, has benefited the corporate interests and completely dumped on the people that elected them to office. While we, the people, can rock the vote, we can’t line the wallet nearly as well as corporate lobbyists can.

John McCain’s pathetic excuse for a bill with the horribly misleading name of the Internet Freedom Act is only half right. It should be called Internet Freedom for Corporations to Do as They Please act. That would be a much better description of the bill.

Right now we have the unique opportunity to help protect something we helped to build. We have the opportunity to keep the internet out of the hands of corporate raiders that would use it for nefarious purposes to make themselves even wealthier.

When the automobile industry was run into the ground because of lack of regulation and complete and total greed from the top down, who do you think paid the highest price? How many CEO’s houses do you think are abandoned and up for sale in Detroit? The workers, the common folks, the people who use the internet to let their voices be heard. The people who unite together to form a chorus of information around the world. Free information. Easy to access information.

My website, your website we all have the same playing field as the big guys. Our sites aren’t pushed aside for preferential treatment in search of the almighty dollar. If we stand idly by and allow Net Neutrality to be voted down by corporate shills, we could well be watching our children and our children’s children using a dramatically different, far less revolutionary form of communication. One where all your actions and information is controlled by the people with enough money to buy that kind of power.

And if you want to hear a funnier, more concise take on the issue, check out the Daily Show’s segment on Net Neutrality after the jump.

Heads of Industries Receiving Federal Bailout Plot to Keep Unions Down Under Obama Administration

The same “Titans of Industry” that are begging for our tax dollars to bail them out (a.k.a. save their million dollar bonuses) are already strategizing how to keep unions down under Obama.

092808x1Wikileaks has released the contents of a “secret hour-long telephone recording between US heads of industry discussing efforts to prevent the emancipation of unions under an Obama administration.”

Here’s a brief description of the call posted over at HuffPo written by Sam Stein:

Three days after receiving $25 billion in federal bailout funds, Bank of America Corp. hosted a conference call with conservative activists and business officials to organize opposition to the U.S. labor community’s top legislative priority.

Participants on the October 17 call — including at least one representative from another bailout recipient, AIG — were urged to persuade their clients to send “large contributions” to groups working against the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), as well as to vulnerable Senate Republicans, who could help block passage of the bill.

Bernie Marcus, the charismatic co-founder of Home Depot, led the call along with Rick Berman, an aggressive EFCA opponent and founder of the Center for Union Facts. Over the course of an hour, the two framed the legislation as an existential threat to American capitalism, or worse.

Let’s hope Obama takes this as a direct attack on his agenda and acts quickly and harshly to reprimand this sort of collusion.

Here’s the Wikileaks post with audio: Anti-union call between Bank of America, Bernie Marcus, et al. and Rick Berman, 17 Oct 2008.

Circuit City Officially Announces Total Liquidation

circuit_cityIf you’re looking to pick up some electronics, tomorrow may be a good day to get a few good deals provided you can get your hands on them.

This is what is currently posted on Circuit City’s website:

Circuit City would like to thank all of the customers who have shopped with us over the past 60 years. Unfortunately, we announced on January 16, 2009, that we are going out of business.

Please check back later for updates about the status of our website. In the meantime, we hope the information below will help answer most of your questions.

A few months ago Circuit City announced it was going to be filing bankrptcy, shutting down many of their stores and reorganizing but staying in business.  Apparently they forgot about the recession.

We had hoped to be able to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as a stronger, more competitive company and we made significant progress during the reorganization to improve our business.  Unfortunately, the economic climate is so poor that we have no choice other than liquidation.

Total liquidation.  Employees are getting 60-days pay and a thank you.  This is going to put a lot more people out of work.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of Circuit City, mainly because their customer service sucked since they made the decision to fire all of their employees who had been with the company for a while and were “making too much money” and replaced them with minimum wage dolts that do nothing but crank up the music in the home entertainment section, which is probably why they’re in this position in the first place, but it’s never good to see a chain this big go out of business.  Best Buy has a virtual monopoly now and less competition will mean less deals.

Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich Caught Trying to Auction Off Obama’s Vacant Senate Seat

Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich may not be the sharpest tool in the shed. Blago seems oblivious to the fact that it’s, pretty universally, frowned upon to try and auction off the now vacant Senate seat, left open by Barack Obama, to the highest bidder.

Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich embarked on a “corruption crime spree” and tried to benefit from his ability to appoint President-elect Barack Obama’s replacement in the U.S. Senate, federal officials said Tuesday.

At a news conference in Chicago on Tuesday, U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald called it a sad day for the citizens of Illinois and alleged that the governor tried to “auction off” the Senate seat “to the highest bidder.”

He said the alleged behavior “would make (Abe) Lincoln roll over in his grave.”

Umm, yeah.  I’m pretty sure Lincoln’s casket is worn the fuck out from rolling over in his grave over the past hundred or so years.

All of this leads MSNBC to ask how widespread you think political corruption is?  All of this leads me to campaign for a new, more appropriate word, to describe our current government.  Politorruption.  The entire fucking system is corrupt, why not call it like it is.  I’m not saying every single politiruptition is corrupt but I wouldn’t exactly shit a brick if it came out that was indeed a well established fact.

So far about 78% of people who have taken the poll believe that there is “more corruption than we know”.  78% of people believe we are being daily fucked by our government and, for the most part, choose to do nothing about it.  I bet if we made political corruption or cronyism or any proof that a politician is looking out for the interests of big business rather than the interests of his or her constituents punishable by death we would solve the issue pretty rapidly.

Is it worse to take one life than to make thousands of lives so miserable the person often believes that life may not be worth living?  Is it worse than making millions of people literal wage slaves so as to not be able to take a moment to actually enjoy this wondrous world we live in with all its beautiful splendor?  Can you sleep at night in your million dollar homes knowing that the people  you claim to represent have little to no time for introspection or simple joy because the real fear of not being able to put food on their table or keep a roof over their head is omnipresent in their lives?

Anyway, go vote in the poll and leave your two cents in the comments.

Congress, White House Agree on $15 Billion for Auto Industry

money_bagThe Big 3 auto industry execs just hit the lottery with taxpayer money.  After nearly all of America crapped a brick this morning at the news that the economy lost over a half a million jobs in November alone, Congress and Bush, firmly wedged in their self-created corners came to a tentative agreement to bailout (not buyout) the the Big 3 American auto manufacturers.

The damnable part is, there seems to be little to no stipulations for the auto industry.  Just, “Here’s our $15 billion, keep going, business as usual.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi released a statement that was direct enough to allay concerns but vague enough as to not actually be able to hole anyone to actual standards.

“Congress will insist that any legislation include rigorous and ongoing oversight to guarantee that taxpayers are protected and that resources are directed to ensure the long-term viability and competitiveness of the American automobile industry,” Pelosi’s statement said.

The bitch of the entire fucking thing is instead of demanding that this money be used to restructure the auto industry and include smaller manufacturers that are light years of ahead of the Big 3 in alternative fueled vehicles, they make no mention of that.  You can’t “ensure the long-term viability and competitiveness of the American automobile industry” and allow the same greedy fucks that ran it into the ground in the first place to stay in charge.

We need auto industry executives that are more concerned with building reliable, fuel efficient and alternatively powered vehicles than with raking in millions upon millions of dollars for themselves while their industry gets flushed down the toilet and passed in quality by virtually every single foreign market.

Let me be very clear that in this capitalist society we live in I have absolutely no problem with people making millions of dollars and living the dream, with two small stipulations of course.  That wealth needs to be spread out a little more between the suits that sit in their office and the men and women who’s blood and sweat actually keep the industry alive.  And the second being that if you are so completely inept at running your business that you need a government bail out, it’s time to find a new line of work.

I will get up on a soap box and waving my American flag guarantee that if you were to replace these greedy corporate whores with actual men of integrity and a passion for automobiles that within 10 years time every car manufactured in the United States could boast a 10 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty and getting at, or close to, 100 mpg.

Instead, we get this lame duck bailout which is actually being funded by “billions originally ticketed for development of more environmentally friendly cars”.

In a subsequent statement, she added that the billions originally ticketed for development of more environmentally friendly cars would be repaid “within a matter of weeks.” Democrats said her hope was to include the funds in an economic recovery bill that lawmakers are expected to prepare for President-elect Barack Obama’s signature shortly after he takes office.

We shouldn’t have to have a seperate stack of billions to fund development of environmentally friendly cars.  This money should be absolutely dependant on the fact that automakers meet stringent standards and create environmentally friendly cars themselves.  Then they can pay back our billions of dollars and we could use it on something zany like education or health care or something.

For Taxpayer’s Sake: Buyout Don’t Bailout General Motors, Ford and Chrysler

This $700 billion bailout is already starting to sound like a golden parachute to me.  Something we were promised it would not be.

A few days ago I pointed out a few staggering statistics regarding GM, including among other things, how its stock price has plummeted from $60 per share to around $4 per share since Richard Wagoner took the helm as CEO in 2000.  Not to mention the fact the company announced a third-quarter loss of 2.5 billion dollars.

Should this sort of incompetence be rewarded?  Should the fact that American auto manufacturers have consistently, for the past 30 years, lagged behind foreign manufacturers in quality, fuel efficiency and pricing.

Even as experts predicted the coming rise in fuel prices, American auto makers continued to pump out SUVs with seemingly no concern for sustainability, the environment or the future.

I grew up in a family that never owned anything but GM cars.  My Dad, who always owned a pickup would have rather walked than to have owned a foreign made truck.  He was old school though.  He was around when America was proud of the quality of cars they made.

I’m sure I will be attacked and promulgated with insults over this stance but I can’t be alone in my thoughts.  This is in no way a reflection on the UAW.  Their hard work and sweat that is the backbone of a huge part of what has made this country great.  That being said, it cannot be a free pass for the people running the auto industry to allow it to become a dinosaur.  To refuse set new emission standards and keep up with a dynamic, changing economy.  Can you name more than one American made hybrid (or even one for that matter)?

We saw the same thing happen in 1970 when the federal government took over what was then the Pullman Company and federalize the national railroad system creating Amtrak.  Amtrak is still alive today thanks to the government buyout.  I won’t go as far as to say Amtrak is doing well but it is the fucking railroad, it hasn’t been the preferred method of travel in like 80 years what do you expect.

Please Congress, don’t bailout the auto industry, do not reward the incompetence of corporate America.  Buy them out.  Trim the fat of the incompetent executives running the show, employ more hard working Americans and make the American auto industry the leader in innovation and technology once again.

If the taxpayers are to be burdened with saving the auto industry from selfish, greedy and bungling suits that have driven it into the ground, the taxpayers should be rewarded with affordable, reliable cars and trucks that they can be proud of, that they in fact own a piece of.

No reward.  No risk.

Meet the New Boss, Same as the Old Boss: Obama Asks Bush to Bail Out Automakers

This is not an easy post for me to write.  I sincerely hope Obama sticks to his promise to look out for the middle class.  To put an end to our current corporate climate where all the risk is socialized and all the rewards are privatized.

The Bush administration, which has presided over a major intervention in the financial industry, has balked at allowing the automakers to tap into the $700 billion bailout fund, despite warnings last week that General Motors might not survive the year.

Separate from his differences with Mr. Bush, Mr. Obama has signaled to the automakers and the unions that his support for short-term aid now, and long-term assistance once he takes office, is contingent on their willingness to agree to transform their industry to make cleaner, more energy-efficient vehicles.

That’s all well and good but the auto industry should be forced through regulations to make cleaner, more energy-effecient vehicles on their own, seperate from any stimulus package.  Companies cannot be consistently rewarded for running an entire industry into the ground only to be bailed out by our tax dollars.

In 2008 Daniel H. Mudd, CEO of Fannie Mae had a base salary of $986,923.  After his bonus, stock awards, change in pension value and other compensation his total compensation was $14,231,650.  That works out to about $4,561/hr based on a (probably generous) 60/hr work week.  All of this while his company so far has posted over $31 billion in losses in 2008.  Imagine how much his bonus would have been if they had actually been operating in the black.  That’s a pretty generous salary for the CEO of a company that was doing so poorly it had to be seized by the government this year.

Washington’s growing financial sector was one of the first to feel the effects of the year-long slide that grew out of the mortgage mess. Although most financial firms saw their stocks wither, the industry’s top executives continue to be among the best paid in the region, according to a Washington Post survey of large public companies.

Now for the General Motors bailout.  Let’s look at a few facts.  Since Richard Wagoner took over as CEO of GM in 2000 here’s a short-list of what he’s presided over:

  • GM paid huge dividends even as its pension and health care obligations spiraled out of control leaving the company in a precarious capital position.
  • When SUVs started to get hot, GM essentially bet its future on the continuation of that trend and the reasonably low gas prices that made it possible. That’s right: GM was essentially an commodities speculation hedge fund masquerading as a car company. Now Bloomberg is reporting that GM lost $2 billion on leased SUVs.
  • The stock was trading in the $60 per share range when Wagoner took the helm and now it’s fallen to $11.07 $4.36 and Merrill Lynch is saying that a GM bankruptcy is “not impossible.” And remember: Merrill Lynch has been overly optimistic about its own ability to survive without raising capital. So “not impossible” may very well mean “quite possible.”
  • The company announced a third-quarter loss of 2.5 billion dollars and said it had burned through another 6.9 billion of cash during the three-month period, leaving it with cash reserves of 16.2 billion.

In 2007, Wagoner took home $14,415,914, a 41% raise over 2006.

If we are going to continue to dump taxpayer money into these bohemoth money vacuums we need to socialize the rewards as well as the risk.

The middle class you spoke of so often on the campaign trail Mr. Obama, most of them cannot fathom such salaries.  Many of them put all of their hopes into you to help lead us into change.  You cannot stand by while corporate America continues to plunder the middle class, the backbone of this country.

Even as the company was pleading the federal government for another $40 billion dollars in loans, AIG sent top executives to a secret gathering at a luxury resort in Phoenix last week at a cost of $343,000.

No, that’s not a repeat of an old story.  Yes, it happened AGAIN.

Any consideration of a bailout of any industry must go hand in hand with a government takeover and restructuring of executive salaries and corporate waste and greed on the taxpayer’s dime must be made an example of.  Otherwise, please leave our money out of this mess.

“No taxation without representation” began as a slogan in the period 1763–1776 that summarized a primary grievance of the British colonists in the Thirteen Colonies. In short, many in those colonies believed the lack of direct representation in the distant British Parliament was an illegal denial of their rights as Englishmen, and therefore laws taxing the colonists (the kind of law that affects the most individuals directly), and other laws applying only to the colonies, were unconstitutional.

Now, 232 years later the people need a new slogan to rally around.  “No risk without reward”.  If you are going to gamble our money on whether or not a company that has consistently proven unable to survive on its own, even as its executives continue to garner extravagant salaries, we demand a new level of accountability from the executives while we see tangible returns on our money, without which none of this would be possible.

Bush Administration and Oil Companies Fellate Each Other, Screw American Public

In what can probably be classified as the least shocking news of the decade, a new report, backed by eye witness evidence, came out that the oil companies have been enjoying one hell of a ride over the past, oh let’s say, 7 1/2 years, give or take.

A report, conducted by the Interior Department’s inspector general and released earlier this month, found that employees at the agency received improper gifts from energy industry officials and engaged with them in illegal drug use and inappropriate sexual relations. It looked at activities at the agency from 2003 through 2006.

The inspector general’s 27-page summary says that nearly a third of the roughly 60 people in Maxwell’s former office received gifts and gratuities from oil industry executives.

Two received improper, if not illegal, gifts at least 135 times, the report says. It goes on to describe a wild atmosphere in which some staff members admitted using cocaine and marijuana.

In addition, two female workers at the Minerals Management Service were known as the “MMS chicks” and both told investigators they had sex with oil industry officials they were supposed to be auditing.

OK, I really need to start hanging out with more Minerals Management Service chicks.  Anyone want to start a pool to keep track of exactly when all of these non-existent punishments will be handed down, not to mention when the American people will likely see the $500 million in royalties owed to them by oil companies that they literally sex, drugged and rock & rolled their way out of?  Good luck with that.
