The New School in Exile

3119830190_5d88acf9c1_bIt seems that the students over at The New School are taking this whole “change” thing pretty effing literally.

Students have occupied part of the campus in what was initially, and still for the most part is, a peaceful protest of the administration of their school.  It seems they are very nonplussed at the idea of having an outspoken, vocal supporter of the Iraq war as their President (join the club kids) and are hellbent to force him out.

While the sit-in, which has been ongoing for two days now, refuses to disperse, police are obviously keeping anyone else from going in so a spontaneous protest has spilled out onto the streets outside the building being occupied.

The students have released a list of demands which includes, “The removal of Bob Kerrey as president of our university” and “The removal of James Murtha as executive vice president of our university”, among many other things.  Most of which involve having the students, faculty and staff being more involved in virtually every aspect of the school’s decision making process.

President-elect Obama Lays Out His Plan to Make the Internets Better

It’s pretty freaking cool that we have President that not only knows, but realizes how important it is that the United States is ranked 15th in world broadband adoption.  He promises to bring broadband to schools and hospitals across the country.

That’s all well and good but let’s home he also deals with the fact that our broadband completely sucks compared to the rest of the world.

Umm yeah, I’ll take some of that Japanese broadband please.  Is there anything invented in the US that the Japanese don’t take and make a thousand times better?

I am so smart, S M R T…I mean S M A R T

Over 42 million American adults are illiterate.  Sad.

No Rich, White Child Left Behind

I wonder if this is what Bush had in mind when he signed the No Child Left Behind Act.

On a winter night in 2002, after her family was evicted from their Bronx apartment, there was no room for her with relatives who had taken in her mother and four younger siblings. For two nights she rode the subway to keep warm. Then a young man she knew gave her a place to sleep.”I guess I loved him, but on the other hand there was this depressing moment of, like, nothing’s going right in my life,” she said. “He was there for me. I felt, well, it’s the least I can do.”

A 17 year old girl in a a college prep high school in The Bronx. It takes her two hours to commute there from the homeless shelter she lives at in Queens. Her story is one of many across the country.

This is a girl who had to give up using feminine birth control because she couldn’t ask her mother for the $15 it costs to get it. Maybe this girl got all the good stuff in the no child left behind program, that’s why there’s none left for this 17 year old homeless girl.

How are we going to save the world when we can’t even save ourselves. I looked up the definition of “no” and “child” and then figured out what the phrase “no child left behind” could possibly mean. The only thing that I could come up with is that Bush is once again full of shit and using ridiculous promises and gimmicky quotes for political gain, while the real problem goes unresolved.

Thanks again Preznit Bush.
